The two details that decide how well a pergola works are how far apart the battens sit and which way they run. Battens running north to south throw a moving shadow through the day; running east to west they give more consistent cover at midday.
Closer spacing means more shade and a heavier look, wider spacing means a lighter structure and more sun. It is worth a conversation rather than a default, because it is fixed once it is built.
