What separates an alfresco from a covered patio is that it is finished. A proper ceiling instead of bare roof sheeting, lighting and power run in, and a floor that relates to the inside.
It is worth deciding what goes in it before we build. A ceiling fan, a heater or a built-in barbecue all need wiring in before the ceiling is closed up.

Keeping the Light Inside
The one risk with an alfresco is that a solid roof directly outside the living room windows makes the room behind it noticeably darker. It is the most common complaint after the fact and it is entirely avoidable.
A higher junction, a section of clear roofing, or a highlight window above the alfresco roof all solve it. What matters is that it is considered before the roof goes on rather than after the rooms go dim.
Where It Pairs With Other Work
An alfresco works hardest when the room it opens off has been opened up too. Doing it alongside an open plan living extension means the inside and outside spaces are designed together rather than one being added to the other.
It also pairs naturally with a deck, with the alfresco covering the part nearest the house and the deck running out beyond the roofline into the sun.
