Decking Questions
Size and height are the two drivers. A low deck on flat ground is the cheapest thing we build. An elevated deck needs deeper footings, a heavier frame underneath, a balustrade and stairs, which changes the number considerably. Timber choice moves it again.
For most homes here, a hardwood such as merbau, spotted gum or blackbutt. They stand up to the conditions and age far better than treated pine. Composite is worth a look if you would rather not oil it every year or two. We will talk through the trade-offs honestly.
A properly built hardwood deck should give you well over twenty years. What shortens that is almost never the timber; it is poor ventilation, the wrong fixings, or ground contact where there should not be any.
Low decks often do not. Once you get above a certain height, or close to a boundary, a building permit is generally required and a balustrade becomes mandatory. We check where your deck sits before quoting.
A hardwood deck wants oiling roughly every twelve to eighteen months depending on how much sun and rain it takes. Skipping it will not destroy the deck but it will grey off, which some people actually prefer.

Low Decks and Elevated Decks
A low deck sitting just above ground level is the simplest build, but it is also the one most often done badly, because the tight space underneath makes ventilation hard and rot easy. It needs deliberate airflow and no ground contact at all.
An elevated deck is a more involved structure with footings, posts, a balustrade and usually a set of timber stairs, and it has to be engineered for the height and the load rather than assembled by eye.
Sloping Blocks Through the Hills
Plenty of the blocks through Harkaway, Lysterfield and Beaconsfield Upper fall away sharply behind the house, which is exactly the situation where a deck earns its cost. It turns unusable slope into flat, usable space.
It also means proper footings at varying depths, a considered frame underneath and stairs down to the lower level. It is regular work for us and it is where a deck makes the biggest difference to how a property is used.
