An attached carport uses the house for one side of its support, which makes it cheaper and usually neater. It also means cutting into the existing roof or wall, so the flashing has to be right or you have created a leak.
A freestanding carport avoids all of that and can go anywhere on the block the setbacks allow, at the cost of a full set of posts and footings on both sides.
