The thing that makes finishing carpentry look considered is that it is the same everywhere. Handles at the same height in every room, trims set back the same distance off every door frame, and skirting meeting doorways the same way throughout.
None of that costs more. It just requires setting the standard at the first opening and then holding it, rather than working each room out as you reach it.

On a renovation the challenge is matching new finishing carpentry into existing. Old architrave profiles are frequently no longer made, and skirting heights from the 1970s rarely match anything on the shelf now.
